Biography Of Stephen I. Chazen
Stephen I. Chazen is President and Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy), an international oil and gas exploration and production company and the fourth-largest oil and gas company in the United States, based on equity market capitalization.
Prior to his appointment in May 2011, Mr. Chazen served for a year as President and Chief Operating Officer, with responsibility for the chief financial officer, corporate development and investor relations functions, as well as domestic oil and gas operations, worldwide exploration and worldwide reserves and reservoir engineering. Also reporting to him were Oxy’s midstream operations and wholly owned subsidiaries including Occidental Chemical Corporation and Oxy Energy Services.
Before being named President and COO of the corporation in August 2010, Mr. Chazen served for three years as President and Chief Financial Officer. He was CFO and Senior Executive Vice President from 2004 to 2007, and CFO and Executive Vice President-Corporate Development from 1999 to 2004. Mr. Chazen joined Oxy as Executive Vice President-Corporate Development in 1994. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2010.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Chazen held various positions in the Investment Banking division of Merrill Lynch from 1982 to 1994, rising to Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance. He worked as Director of Project Evaluation and Reservoir Engineering at Columbia Gas Development Corporation from 1977 to 1979. Mr. Chazen began his career at Northrop Corporation in 1973 as Laboratory Manager at the Johnson Space Center, where he worked until 1977.
Mr. Chazen holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Rutgers College, a master’s degree in Finance from the University of Houston and a Ph.D. in Geology from Michigan State University.
